  1. REVIEW: INTERNET HANDBOOK FOR LAW LIBRARIANS  James Milles  Glanville Publishers

  3. This handbook, written for a highly specialized audience, was authored by the
  4. Head of Computer Services at Saint Louis University Law Library, James Milles
  5. who is also the Moderator of a BITNET newsgroup (bit.listserv.nettrain) for
  6. Internet instructors and teachers.  Its main value is listing the main
  7. sources of information of interest to law librarians and how to use the Net
  8. to search and obtain it.

  10. INTERNET HANDBOOK FOR LAW LIBRARIANS provides a thumbnail description of
  11. other networks available - such as Law:Forum, BITNET and ABAnet as well as 
  12. a brief history of the Internet and NREN itself.  Also covered are the major
  13. building blocks such as Mail, TELNET, FTP, as well as "newer" tools like
  14. WAIS, GOPHER and the World-Wide Web.

  16. Of major interest are brief description of mailing lists, UNIX and BU 
  17. LISTSERV commands, Law, Law-related, Library and Miscellaneous mailing
  18. lists (and how to find more), various library and academic on-line catalogs,
  19. other Federal and State electronic bulletin boards, Freenets and menu 
  20. access systems of particular interest to law librarians.  In addition, there
  21. is a chapter with suggestions for Internet research strategy.  The appendices
  22. include E-mail etiquette, starting and running a discussion group and a list
  23. of bibliographical references.

  25. My main critique of INTERNET HANDBOOK FOR LAW LIBRARIANS is that it is 
  26. somewhat dated (1993) given the fast changing world of the Internet.  The
  27. bibliography particularly is lacking.  The main sites and address seem to
  28. be current, although I have not verified any of them.  Is it worth $100.00?
  29. Well, certainly not to the general Net user like you and me, but it may well
  30. be to the specialized user for whom the handbook was intended.  It is included
  31. at no additional charge with a subscription to the Law Library Information
  32. Report series (price unknown) available from Glanville Publishers Inc, (75
  33. Main Street, Dobbs Ferry NY 10522).
